For many environmentally conscious people, their ecological footprint causes concern. The measurement of a human’s ecological footprint incorporates human demand on nature, as well as consumption of natural resources. While ecological footprints have negative impacts on our environment, there are small steps that can be taken in daily life to decrease your mark. Here are some actions you can take to lower your impact on the environment.
There are simple steps you can take to reduce the amount of water you use. You can turn off the faucet while you brush your teeth or take quicker showers. Consider saving the water you use to wash vegetables and fruit or to water your houseplants or garden.
Reduce your use of air conditioning
While air conditioners make summer days more bearable, they also burn fossil fuels and release carbon dioxide. Instead of reaching for the AC or electric fan, opt for pulling down window blinds to block out the sun. Refrain from cooking with an oven or stove during hot weather if possible, and take advantage of frozen ice packs.
Though plastic utensils are convenient for lunch breaks, they’re not beneficial for the environment. Consider using metal or bamboo utensils you can wash and continue to use.
If you find yourself with a lot of organic waste—scraps from fruits and vegetables—compost instead of throwing away. Compost can be used as fertilizer in your gardens or landscaping and will provide rich nutrients. Even better, it cuts back on food waste.
Take reusable bags to the grocery store
Though plastic bags are common in grocery stores, once thrown away, they litter landfills and endanger wildlife. Instead of choosing plastic bags, consider buying reusable grocery totes you can take with you when you go shopping.
Use public transportation, walk, or cycle
Despite their convenience, vehicles burn fossil fuels. To reduce your ecological footprint, carpool, or use public transportation to cut back on the amount of fuels burned on your commute. If at all possible, reduce your consumption of fossil fuels by walking or cycling whenever possible.
Give unwanted items to charities
Instead of throwing old clothes or toys away, consider donating gently used items to charities. Not only does this act help people in need, it also reduces the amount of material waste.
Recycle as much as you can
When possible, recycle as much as you can. Properly recycle plastics, aluminum, and cardboard boxes. If you’re throwing away magazines, give them to friends or local doctor offices instead. Recycle old appliances and technology. Consider buying items made out of recycled material.
While simple, all of these steps can help you drastically reduce your impact on the environment.
